Buy Your Dream House in Spain for under $50,000. Let’s All Move to…
Ever felt the need to get away from it all and escape to sunny Spain for a little fun and sangria? Well, buying that dream Spanish holiday home doesn’t have to cost a fortune if you know where to look…
You’ve probably heard of local councils in rural, crumbling Italian villages trying to sell off their decaying houses for $1 each to outsiders in a desperate bid to attract fresh blood to the area. Indeed, many such schemes exist in Spain too, one such being in the Municipality of Igüeña, in the county of El Bierzo, part of the autonomous region of Castile & León which has been offering homes at almost giveaway prices to attract new residents and second-home owners, and not without some success. Here, you can purchase a three or four-bedroom town house (admittedly with a fair amount of work needing doing) for under €5000.
Cheap Spanish holiday homes are available right across the country and some of it in utterly beautiful surroundings. As the villages in the interior of this fascinating country empty of elderly residents passing away and young people looking to make lives for themselves in the big cities of Madrid and Barcelona and overseas, housing options are flooding the market. Here I explore three of the absolute best value towns in Spain. Keep reading- they might just be where you end up buying the Spanish holiday home of your dreams!
Martos, Andalucía
According to the property website Idealista.com Martos, in Andalucía, known for its excellent olive oil, is “a very cheap city, with an average selling price of just 38,000 euro”.
Yes, you read that right; 38,000 euros (or just over $45,000) is the cost of the average property in this town. Nestled in the mountains between Cordoba and Jaén, it is admittedly, a little remote. However, the views are spectacular, the locals friendly, the food incredible and it’s only around an hour by car to some of the most desirable beaches on the south coast. You’ll have to factor in the cost of remodelling most of the time as these houses can be hundreds of years old, but when a property costs south of 40,000 euros, there should be a little left in the tank for sprucing the place up and turning into your ideal Spanish holiday home.
Barruelo de Santullán, Palencia
Barruelo de Santullán in northern Spain may be slightly cooler and wetter than the likes of Martos, but it’s also more developed. There are multiple services available in the town of Barruelo such as supermarkets, hotels, restautants and a medical centre.
More enticingly perhaps, in the Santullán valley where Barruelo nestles there are landscapes and nature in a practically virgin state. If you’re an art afficionado, romanesque Palencia is just down the road, where you’ll be in your element. To top it all off, there is golf, hiking and even skiing available in nearby Cantabria.
A quick glance at Idealista.com shows that there are plenty of period properties in this Spanish town available for less than $50,000.
Puerto Serrano, Andalucía
Another entry on the list from Andalucía, Puerto Serrano is located in the middle of the Seville, Málaga, Cadíz triangle and has decent access to them all. While it may be a little on the rural side for some, with a population of just under 7,000, the town has all the necessary amenities such as banks and bakeries, as well as being a favourite stop-off for bikers and hikers keen to explore the nearby mountains.
Final Thoughts
There are hundreds of reasons to want to buy a Spanish holiday home and start a new life in Spain; the sun shines for 320 days a year, the food is amazing and the landscapes are unreal. With property prices in certain parts of the country consistently great value, now might just be the time to make the move to start the life you’ve always dreamed of. Olé!
